The display, featuring the beloved Happy Hollow mascot as a gift-laden sleigh carrying Santa Claus (and dubbed the “Dragon Sleigher”), was built by the great Tom Trafton. Though he’s officially retired from the city now, Trafton has either created or refurbished many of the features of both Christmas in the Park and Happy Hollow, making him the perfect mind to design a collaboration between the two San Jose institutions. Heather Lerner, executive director of the Happy Hollow Foundation, said she and Christmas in the Park Executive Director Jason Minsky loved the idea of a partnership. Trafton came up with the concept and transformed Danny’s “body double” into the sleigh display that graces the park’s western edge.

It’s hard to see what Reno sees in young broker Billy Crocker, who’s on the bland side as portrayed by Tim Wagner, but he does have an entertaining penchant for ludicrous disguises, courtesy of costumer Margaret daSilva. But of course Billy has eyes only for Amy Franklin Leonards’ listless Hope Harcourt, a blank and unresponsive society type who we’re led to believe loves him too under all that propriety. Artistic director David Judson gives the comedy a spirited staging, with a few lively big dance numbers choreographed by Suzanne Brandt. The small orchestra under the direction of Brett Strader does a fine job with Porter’s delightful songs, and so do the singers.
